Getting a US Passport: Quick Tips

A valid U.S. Passport is required for all air travel outside of the United States.
1. Determine Eligibility
First-time applicant: Must apply in person.
Renewal: Eligible if your passport is undamaged, issued when you were age 16 or older, issued within the last 15 years, and issued in your current name or you can legally document your name change.
2. Gather Required Documents
Proof of Citizenship: One of the following:
U.S. birth certificate
Naturalization certificate
Previous U.S. passport
Proof of Identity: One of the following:
Driver’s license
Government ID
Military ID
Passport Photo: A recent, 2x2 inch color photo meeting the official requirements.
3. Complete the Application Form
FIRST-TIME APPLICANTS: Fill out Form DS-11 here. Do not sign and continue as instructed.
RENEWALS: Fill out Form DS-82 here. Mail your completed form, payment, and documents in a secure envelope.
Please Note: Renewals are only available by mail if your passport: is undamaged, was issued within the last 15 years, or was issued after age 16.
FOR URGENT TRAVEL: request expedited service or visit a passport agency with proof of travel.
4. Payment
Fees: Check the current fee on the U.S. State Department website.
Payment methods: Check or money order made out to "U.S. Department of State" (credit/debit cards may be accepted at certain locations).
5. Track Your Application
Use the online tracking tool on the U.S. State Department website.
6. Processing Time
Routine Processing: Typically takes 8-11 weeks.
Expedited Processing: If you need your passport sooner, visit a passport agency or apply for expedited service for an additional fee.
Traveling internationally in less than 3 weeks? Make an appointment to apply at a passport agency or center once you're within 14 days of travel.
7. Additional Tips
Make Copies: Keep photocopies of all documents submitted.
Check Photo Requirements: Ensure your passport photo meets the specifications to avoid delays.
Plan Ahead: Apply well in advance of any planned travel.
Check the expiration date! Many countries require at least 6 months’ validity from your planned return date.
