MONEY MATTERS

  • United Arab Emirates Dirham AED, As of March 2024: $1 U.S. Dollar is equal to 3.67 AED

  • You can exchange money at the bank, hotel, airport, or exchange bureau. Before you exchange, make sure to compare the rates and fees. Carrying a small amount of local currency for immediate expenses upon arrival is also advisable

  • Credit and debit cards can be used as a convenient way to manage your expenses. However, be aware of the transaction fees and the currency conversion fee

  • Tipping is appreciated 10 – 15%

  • When bargaining, always start with a price; however, be prepared to walk away if you do not get a reasonable offer

  • Stealing is prohibited. Visitors will be charged with theft under UAE law

  • No profanity in public places

  • Bathing suits are not allowed in public areas except in the pool area

  • Beachwear is acceptable at resorts but not in public areas; lightweight clothes are acceptable

  • Do not wear offensive or revealing clothes in public, shopping malls, beaches, or mosques

  • No disorderly conduct in public

  • Do not disrespect the religion or culture

  • No smoking in public

  • It is illegal to drink or to be intoxicated in public. However, drinking is permitted in licensed venues such as hotels, restaurants and clubs

  • No intimacy, kissing, hugging, or holding hands in public

  • It is considered rude to point your finger, show the soles of your feet, or make the “OK” sign

GENERAL TIPS

  • Avoid drinking tap water and opt for bottled or filtered water instead

  • English is widely spoken in tourist areas

  • Electricity & Adapters – standard British three-pin plug

  • Stay hydrated and wear sunscreen

  • Dubai is 11 hours ahead of California & 8 hours ahead of New York City & Maryland
